How Does a Flat Iron Work on Hair?

October 13th, 2010 · Comments Off · Flat Irons

Flat irons, also known as straightening irons for hair, work by changing the structure of your hair with heat. Modern hair flat irons warm up very quickly, often in as little as 10 seconds, and the constant and even source of heat helps the iron work better to straighten hair.

Since heat can cause damage to hair, many hair straightening flat irons are either solid ceramic, or are coated with ceramic, tourmaline or titanium. These coatings help reduce the damage to the hair, and create a smoother plate, which assists in process of straightening the hair.

While the high heat of the flat iron is the main factor in how well hair is straightened, it is recommended that the lowest possible heat setting is used to avoid damaging hair. Thick and course hair will need to use higher heat settings, while fine and/or thin hair should use lower heat settings to minimize any damage that can be caused by higher heat settings.
